Werlien Joseph Prosperie Sr, age 82, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, February 4, 2018. He was a native of Montegut and a resident of Houma.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church on Friday, February 9, 2018 beginning at 8:30 am until service time. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am. Burial will be held in St. Francis de Sales #2 Cemetery.
Werlien is survived by his son, Nicholas P. Prosperie and wife, Peggy; daughters, Sonia P. McNamara and Denise P. Fritch; companion, Ruby Jeannette Davis; sister, Janis P. Comeaux; grandchildren, Christopher P. Prosperie, Catherine P. Picou, Elizabeth P. Kurtz, Joshua T. Prosperie, Michael J. Prosperie, Matthew D. Prosperie, Werlien J. Prosperie III, Nekola N. Prosperie, Felicity A. Prosperie; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Werlien is preceded in death by his father, Nicholas Noel Prosperie; mother, Emelie Florence Robichaux Prosperie; son, Werlien J. Prosperie, Jr.; former wife, Beverly Brunet Prosperie; brother, Walton Prosperie; sister, Berle P. Garrie.
Werlien was a lifetime proponent of Community, an advocate for Cajun culture, and a widely known musician. He retired from a long career in the oilfield, working for Texaco and OK Fishing and Rental Tools. Werlien was the founder of the current Jolly Inn, featured in broadcast and print media outlets around the world, showcasing the Cajun experience. After his love and devotion to his family, Werlien enjoyed entertaining people through his music, bringing folks and families alike, from all walks of life, together through the sharing of traditional song, dance, and cuisine. Werlien dedicated himself to the revitalization of South Louisiana’s Cajun heritage, and lived fully all this Good Earth and Sportman’s Paradise has to offer.
The family would like to offer special thanks to his loving care givers, Jeannette Davis, Nekola Prosperie, and Melissa Trahan who gave selflessly of their time during his time of need.
