Ruth Smith

October 7, 1927 — December 1, 2017

Heaven is pleased to welcome Ruth Mae Mudget Smith as its newest resident. Ruth comes to us as of December 1, 2017, from Santa Rosa, California, via Lake Charles, and, most recently Bourg, Louisiana. The move marks a temporary interruption of a 63 year marriage to Albert H. Smith, to whose continuing love and devotion she leaves also their four children, along with their spouses, Linda Etienne and husband Joseph, Sharon LaHoste and her husband Lawrence, David Smith and his wife Donna, and Diane Gaidry and her husband Edward James (Jimmy). Ruth brings to Heaven her determined nature, generous heart, lively cynicism, and unflagging devotion to everything that she loved and valued. She willingly sacrificed in order to ensure that her family was educated, happy and united. Son David and wife Donna are hopeful of passing along Ruth’s unique qualities to her two granddaughters, Sydney and Greer, despite not having the benefit of her helpful advice. By unanimous request, Ruth will not be lending her questionable singing talents to the Celestial Choir. Not wanting to waste anything that may have remaining useful life, she leaves behind also a pocket full of half-used tissues, some plastic margarine tubs, slightly fewer lids, and several pieces of carefully washed and folded aluminum foil. Ruth began this earthly life on October 7, 1927, fourth of Margaret and Arthur Mudget’s five children. A challenging childhood led to her finding purpose and meaning in the military, and before finding her life’s work in building a family she proudly served in the United States Air Force. A reunion with her mother, Margaret, father Arthur, sisters Florence, Marian and Bernice, her brother, Robert, and numerous departed family and friends is planned immediately upon her arrival. The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Brian Matherne and the kind folks at Journey Hospice for their assistance in helping with Ruth’s transition from this life to the next. Deepest thanks go also to Rev. Rob Seale, Fr. Ty Nguyen, Wanda Hurst, and the many people who have shown Ruth much support and kindness during these last months. A final send off for Ruth will begin with a public visitation on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 10:00 AM, and a service at 11:30 AM at Chauvin Funeral Home & Crematory at 5899 Hwy. 311 in Houma, Louisiana. Since Mom is incapable of traveling without her coffee, she will be interred with her coffee mug at St. Ann cemetery at 4353 Hwy. 24 in Bourg, Louisiana, immediately following the service. Chauvin Funeral Home is honored to serve the Smith family.
