OUR QUEEN IS WITH GOD!

Services for Mildred Hughes English will be Saturday January 19, 2019 at Jackson Baptist Church, Highway 7. Visitation will be observed from 1 PM until service time at 3PM. She was 101 years, 7 months and one day.

It is a warm day in East Texas, Jackson Community when Mildred Opal Hughes was born to Bob (ROBERT) and Effie Coopper Hughes. Mildred is the fourth child for Mr. Bob and Ms. Effie. Ceal and Boyce Hughes welcomed their sister with open arms. Their sister Effie had passed away at the age of two. Mildred, Ceal and Boyce welcomed sisters Doris (PUD), Iris and Bobbie—this Hughes family is now complete.

Life for Mildred was good- but like life in 1917 it was hard work mixed with a lot of love. She did not like outside work, therefore she learned to cook, clean and how to run a home. Pud (Doris) loved the outdoors. She had a green thumb, not Mildred.
Mr. Bob and Ms. Effie insisted their children get an education. Each brother and sister did graduate from High School, with Mildred and Iris earning college degrees in education and both went on to teach school.

Mildred graduated from High School May 26,1936 and married her sweetheart and love of her life, John H. English May 27,1936. Where you ask?-----at Jackson Community Baptist Church in Jackson Community. Their wonderful and loving marriage lasted 63 years until John’s death December 26 , 1999. Mildred and John had two sons: One unnamed son who was stillborn and one son James (called Jimmy) Aton English.

Mildred and John’s life was like most young people. They both went to college at Steven F. Austin, where John H. earned a degree. Mildred did not earn her degree until after WWII at the University of Houston. They both worked S.F.A.. She was the telephone operator, he worked in the book store. When they went home to visit, John H. put Mildred and Jimmy on a bus (they did not have a car) and walked home (hitchhiking). They were a happy little family until WWII- when John H. was drafted into the Army. School was over for Mildred. Since Mildred had some college behind her in education, she was asked to teach at Jackson School during WWII. She did. When John H. returned from WWII, a strange pack was formed. He asked her to cook him a hot breakfast everyday and she asked him to do all the driving. They both agreed--------and life was wonderful. They moved from Jackson Community to Hull-Daisetta, Texas where they both were teachers. He was her principal most of the time. How would you like for your husband be your boss?? She did not mind. She loved to teach second grade, but taught first and kindergarten. Some of her students still keep in touch with her and even visiting her in Houma, La where she now lives with her son Jimmy and his wife Nancy.

Mildred always loved to fish. She did not eat them, but loved to catch them. In Houma,LA. when she was about 80 years old, her grandson Paul took her fishing. They came to a dam and she got out of the boat and helped Paul get the boat over the dam. Jimmy and Nancy lived in Bayou DuLarge in Houma. The bayou runs behind their home. Therefore, she could fish anytime. She loved to catch alligators-she just laughs and has fun with a gator on her hook until it would get on land, then she screams and runs. This was funny to see. Mildred’s life has been one of peace and joy. She has seen so many changes in her 101 ½ years of life, but she says she would not change a thing. Her faith in God has kept her strong and has blessed her in so many ways.

She has 3 grandsons: James Paul English, John Fletcher English and Michael Todd English. Two great-grandsons: John F. English, Jr. and Steven F. English and three great granddaughters: Sinamon Donee’ English and Piper Angelle English, and Keyna Roshone Slaughter and two great-great granddaughters: Lyric Lee Naquin and Aaliyah English and one great great grandson, Braxton Englieh.

MILDRED, MAY GOD OPEN HIS ARMS FOR YOU !!
