Meryl Portier

May 28, 1929 — March 21, 2018

Meryl Aline Rita Arceneaux Portier, age 88, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at 7:09 am. She was a native and resident of Houma.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at Chauvin Funeral Home, Inc. on Monday, March 26, 2018 beginning at 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm. and St. Anthony Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 beginning at 8:30 am until a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am. Burial will be held in Bayou Black Cemetery.

Meryl is survived by her sons, Benny P. Portier, Sr. and Jarred A. Portier; daughter, Susan P. Mabile and husband, Warren; grandchildren, Chastity Pitre and husband, Donny, Tasha Ryals and husband, Rory, Ben Portier, Jr. and wife, Katie, and Zachary Mabile; great-grandchildren, Carli’ and Chloe’ Pitre, Averie and Aubrie Ryals.

Meryl is preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Leonce “L.J.” Joseph Portier, Jr.; parents, Allen Joseph and Aline Rita Arceneaux; brothers, Ura J., George J., Benny P. and Harvey Arceneaux; sister, Nellie A. Giroir.

Meryl was a lifelong parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church where she was a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Ladies Altar Society, CCD teacher, bereavement committee leader, office volunteer, and member of New Creation Music Ministry. She was a member of The Woodmen’s of the World and the Bayou Magnolia’s Homemakers Club. She enjoyed eating with her friends at Bayou Delight, vacationing on her bus trips with friends and family, and going to grandchildren and great-grandchildren activities. She loved watching LSU and Saints games. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Special thanks to TGMC CCU staff, Chateau Terrebonne staff, Haydel Family Practice doctors and staff, and sitters for their love and compassion.
