Melvin Joseph Benoit Sr., 91, a native of Dulac, La. and resident of Houma, La. passed away suddenly on the morning of Oct. 27, 2018. Melvin, alongside his wife, “Blackie,” started Sea Tang Fisheries, Inc., a successful shrimp processing company and were owners of several shrimping boats.
Visitations will be held in his honor on Friday, Nov. 2nd, 2018 at his home located at 6087 Grand Caillou Rd., Houma from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., and the following day, Saturday, Nov. 3, at Holy Family Church, Dulac, La. from 9 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. The burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery II in Houma, La.
He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Gloria “Blackie” Scott Benoit; children, Monna Benoit Champagne and Melvin J. Benoit Jr.; son-in-law, Kenneth P. Champagne and daughter-in-law, Marilyn C. Benoit ; and sister, Mae B. Fanguy. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Leonard Benoit, and mother, Corrine Clara Luke Benoit; sisters, Junietta Buquet, Irene Boudreaux, Jeanette Cheramie, Gladys Benoit; brother, Myron Benoit.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. G. Tallluri, Kim Broussard and all the staff at Divinity Home Healthcare, Acadian Ambulance paramedics and the Grand Caillou Fire Department for the excellent care given, and are greatful for the wonderful caretakers of both Melvin and Blackie: Nolia Carrere, Shania Nelton, Hayley Bourg, Joyce Neal, Kaitlyn Bourg, Kizzie Carrere, Cordella Reed, Jalisa Lloyd, Phyllis Cotton, Karen Collins, among others.
