Marian Chauvin Patterson

November 21, 1925 — March 28, 2021

Marian Chauvin (“Mimi”) Patterson peacefully transitioned at her home on March 28, 2021 at 5:15AM surrounded by her loving family, at age 95.

Beloved wife of the late Thomas Howard (“Pat”) Patterson, Sr., Daughter of the late Arthur Joseph Chauvin, Sr. and the late Angelina Boudreaux (“Jake”) Chauvin.

Loving and devoted mother of Thomas Howard Patterson, Jr. (Marian), Victoria Patterson Neil (Alan), and Carolyn Patterson Brown (Michael).

Preceded in death by her beloved only sibling Arthur Joseph (“Billy”) Chauvin, Jr.

Proud grandmother of four grandchildren: India Neil Hesse, Garroch Asher Neil, Angela Claire Brown, and Thomas Connor Patterson.

Great-grandmother of one very special great-grandchild (with a second on the way):  Xuan Hesse.

Mimi was a native of Houma, LA, and although she lived on Guam and in Venezuela early in her married life, she settled in Barrios Subdivision in Houma to raise her family and to plant her beloved garden.  She was a Louisiana Master Gardener as well as long-term member, past President, and President Emeritus of the Terrebonne Garden Club, and a member of the Bar-Berry Garden Club.  She was a local expert on the growing and propagation of Camellias, and a member of the Baton Rouge Camellia Society, attending local and regional Camellia Shows where she proudly displayed her prized blooms. Mimi was also an authority on Louisiana Wildflowers and she developed and planted a Louisiana Wildflower Garden at Southdown House Plantation and Museum. She was also active in organizing and attending a wide range of local Flower Arranging competitions.

Additionally, Mimi was an avid and quite extraordinary Bird-watcher, traveling all around the USA and indeed the world in search of specific or rare species.  In this regard, she was a long-time member and past President of the Terrebonne Bird Club as well as a member of the Crescent City Bird Club.

Mimi was also a proud member of the local Houma Study Club for many years, attending and hosting monthly soirees amongst members to report on and discuss the latest tomes.

She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and was a leader in many civic activities including the judging of local and regional Cleanest City Contests and Christmas Decorations Contests, and was active in the local Historical Society.  She was quite an ardent collector of antiques, and an expert furniture re-finisher, turning many “diamonds-in-the-rough” into beautiful gems with which to adorn her lovely home.

Finally, despite her active club work and civic and volunteer duties, Mimi remained very active in her children’s school and social lives as a Room Mother, Den Mother and Troop Leader.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the compassionate and dedicated care given by her home caregivers Gitana Paz, Belinda Rabun and Lacie Freeman Bergeron, as well as to the Doctors, Nurses and Staff of Journey Hospice of Houma.
