Katharine Daspit, 97, born on September 29, 1920 died peacefully on November 7, 2017. She was the sixth child of Robert Valentine Daspit and Margaret Butler Daspit of Bayou Blue. After graduating from Terrebonne High School, Katharine attended and graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana with a degree in education. She taught school in Cut Off until she enlisted in Air Force during WWII. During her 20 year Air Force career Katharine worked as a photographer, a squadron commander, recruiter and administrator. She retired as a Major. In her 50’s she attended Texas A&M University and received a Masters in Business and Computer Science. Katharine then returned to Terrebonne Parish and worked at First National Bank in Houma. She began a long career of volunteering and being an active member of several local organizations. Katharine was the founding board president for the YWCA, a member of the Houma-Terrebonne Arts and Humanities Council Board, a member of the advisory board of Terrebonne’s Vocational –Technical School, a member of the Terrebonne Historical Society, a Salvation Army board member, a member of the Friends of the Houma Public Library and a board member of the United Way of South Louisiana. After her retirement, Katharine and her sister Carolyn traveled the world together. Katharine was an avid gardener, reader, card player, and brownie baker. She enjoyed sharing her flowers, books and brownies with family, friends, and people who helped her. She was fondly called “the brownie lady”. Katharine is survived by her sister, Louise Daspit Geary and many nieces, nephews and godchildren. Katharine was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Margaret Daspit, her brothers, Robert, John and Woodson, and her sisters, Margaret, Carolyn, Annie B. and Agnes. A funeral mass will be held at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral on Saturday, November 18, at 11:00 am, with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Burial will be in College Station, Texas at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Katharine’s name to the United Way of South Louisiana. Chauvin Funeral Home is honored to serve the Daspit family.
