Elmay Marie Domangue Whitney was born on April 4, 1924 in southern Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. Her life journey ended at 11:40 a.m. on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at St. Anne Ochsner Hospital in Raceland, Louisiana, after a battle with heart disease. She was 94 years old.
Visitation will be held at Chauvin Funeral Home in Houma on Saturday, December 8, 2018 beginning at 9 a.m. with Funeral Service in the chapel beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Holy Rosary Catholic Church Cemetery in Houma.
As a member of “The Greatest Generation,” Elmay always showed a well-developed work ethic. After the war, Elmay began her career as a stay-at-home mom, raising her nine surviving children. Through the years, she also served as a business manager and bookkeeper for the businesses owned with her husband Bernard, including Whitney’s Plumbing & Heating and Whitney’s Trailer Park and Campground. She participated in the Holy Rosary Ladies Altar Society, Holy Rosary Fair Committee, Holy Rosary Choir, and the Krewe of Christopher Carnival Club. Her hobbies included gardening, ceramics, sewing, and fishing. She resided at The Homestead Assisted Living Facility.
Elmay was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Bernard Whitney; sons, Stanley Bernard “Benny” Whitney, Jr., and Thomas Noel Whitney, Sr.; parents, Ella Marie Hutchinson and Wilson Joseph Domangue, Sr.; brothers, Calvin, Jerry, and Russell Domangue; sisters, Elda Crochet (Leslie), Rosalie LeBlanc (Milton), Louella Hutcherson (Ronald), Ural “T-Johnny” Trahan (Sam), and Ora Whitney (John Donald); grandson, Brandon Giles Chaisson; father-in-law, Philip Luke Whitney, Sr.; mother-in-law, Claire Tinney Whitney; and daughter-in-law, Fabian Thibodeaux Whitney (Gregory Sr.).
Surviving children and children’s spouses of Elmay are: Gregory Anthony Whitney, Sr.; Richard David Whitney (Helen Marie Herman); Patricia Ann Whitney; Ella Catherine Whitney (Levis “Lee” LeCompte, Jr.); Mary Frances Whitney; Philip Luke Whitney (Nonna Claire Pitre); Christopher Douglas Whitney (Heather Lecky); and Elmay Marie Whitney Hotard (Irvin “Buddy” Hotard, Jr.). Also surviving Elmay is her daughter-in-law, Diane Boudreaux Bass (Douglas Bass), widow of the late Thomas Whitney.
Elmay is survived by 39 grandchildren (Gregory Anthony Whitney, Jr., Sebastian Michael Whitney, Tara Lynn Whitney, Abraham Paul Whitney (Kim Marie Voisin); Richard David “Rick” Whitney, Jr. (Nicole Domangue), Aaron Paul Whitney (Jenifer Dempsey), Chad Michael Whitney (Amanda Bowden), Jennifer Leigh “Jenny”Whitney, Bryan Daniel Whitney (Amy Robertson), Victoria “Torrie” Kristine Whitney (Jason Fenger), Joshua Jude Whitney, Simon Matthew Whitney, Zachary Drew Whitney (Stephanie Laurie), Hunter Gage Whitney, Forest Christian Whitney, Anastasia Rebecca Whitney (Alex Louque), Xavier Drummond Whitney, Abigail Aria “Abbie” Whitney; Andrea Marie Whitney (Brad Doyle), Thomas Noel “Bubba” Whitney, Jr. (Heidi Cavalier), Noelle Claire Whitney (Johnothon Drop), Elizabeth Ann “Lizzie” Whitney (Robert Quinilty, II); Alex Bernard Gravois (Mary Grace Richard), Gavin Charles Gravois (Morgan Savoie), Albert Joseph “A.J.” Gravois; Mark William Dickey, III (Meghan Jones), Katrin Michelle Dickey (Andy Yorgason, Jr.), Erin Ashley Dickey, Sarah Elizabeth Dickey, Stephen Matthew Whitney; Marissa Kaye Chaisson (Keith Fanguy), Benjamin Douglas Chaisson (Stephanie Lightfoot), Emily Chaisson (Donald “Mike” Bell); Stanley Bernard Whitney, III (Allyce Van Alstine), Teresa “Tess” Whitney (Chris Halbrooks); Kyle Christopher Whitney (Karla Mayorga), Ross Spencer Whitney; William Austin Hotard (Candace Jackson), and Whitney Claire Hotard) and 51 great grandchildren.
Also surviving Elmay are her brother, Wilson “Nicky” Domangue, Jr. (Marsha Joy Hough), and two sisters, Dolly Domangue (Wayne Duplantis), and Susie Domangue, the widow of the late William “Bill” Null.
