Barbara Beary Norman, 78, passed away on November 5, 2014, surrounded by her loving husband and children. A native of Thibodaux and resident of Houma, she graduated from Thibodaux High School and Nicholls State College, where she was the “Little Colonel” of the ROTC.
Barbara dedicated most of her adult life raising and caring for her family of eight children. In doing so, she became the master of organization, creativity, scheduling, coaching and budgeting for any event. She easily assumed the role of adopted “Mom” to the hundreds of children who passed through her home with her children and grandchildren through Ellendale Swim Team and NSU Soccer Team.
Once her children were grown, Barbara entered public service, first working for the Good Samaritan Food Bank, the American Heart Association, and finally Catholic Social Services. While there, she was instrumental in creating the Foster Grandparent Program which paired Seniors with children in need of mentors.
She is survived by her husband, David J. Norman, Jr., her eight children, Lisa Barker Daul, Ann Barker, Richard H. Barker, IV, Michael P. Barker and wife Angelique Thibodeaux, Kelly E. Barker, Keith E. Barker and wife Stacy Johnson, Brett T. Barker and wife Melissa Robichaux, Christopher B. Barker and wife, Kari Lottinger, stepchildren, David Norman, III and Susan Norman Menville. Her grandchildren include Baron A. Daul, Brenna A. Daul, John M. Jaccuzzo and wife Christy Vargas, Meagan Fairley Kinnard and husband Geoffrey, Taylor A. Barker, Michael P. Barker, Jr. and wife Jaime Guillaume, Mitchell J. Barker, Allyson M. Barker, Andrew E. Barker, Mason A. Barker, Joshua B. Barker, Steven L. Benoit, Jr., Ashley B. Goode and husband Derek, Marie “MiMi” A. Barker, Blake T. Barker, Olivia J. Barker, Chase M. Lyons and great grandchildren, Kate A. Barker, Caroline E. Barker and Talloulah A. Goode, her sister, Marie Beary Kearns and husband Buck and sister in law, Jackie Beary.
The family would like to give special thanks to Misty Marcel who became our Mother’s special angel and caretaker. Thanks to Dr. Bill St. Martin, Haydel Memorial Hospice, Winnie Marcel and Candy Boudreaux.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Douglas White Beary and Marie Foret Beary, sister, Elizabeth B. Stagni, brother, Edward D. W. (Ned) Beary, Jr., granddaughter, Alexandra E. Barker and stepdaughter, Melissa A. Norman.
She will be loved and missed, but forever in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Catholic Social Services, The Terrebonne Good Samaritan Food Bank or The American Heart Association.
Visitation for Barbara will be held on Monday, November 10, 2014 from 9:00 AM until Service time at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church the Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 Noon following the visitation. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
