SIDNEY S. CALLAHAN 86, NATIVE OF DULARGE AND RESIDENT OF HOUMA, PASSED AWAY PEACEFULLY ON SEPTEMBER 4, 2013 AT HIS HOME, SURROUNDED BY FRIENDS AND FAMILY.
VISITATION WILL BE SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2013, 9:00 AM TILL FUNERAL MASS AT 11:00AM AT THE ST.ELOI CATHOLIC CHURCH IN THERIOT, LA.
HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS THREE SONS AND THEIR SPOUSES: BARNEY CALLAHAN AND WIFE DONNA SAMANIE, AND EX-WIFE REGINA BAUER CALLAHAN, MARK CALLAHAN AND WIFE JENNY RHODES, REED CALLAHAN AND WIFE LYNETTE THIBODAUX, SIX GRANDCHILDREN: TRAVIS CALLAHAN, KRISTA CALLAHAN, LORA (TOOTIE) CALLAHAN, KATIE AND HUSBAND MARCUS VOISON, ABBY CALLAHAN AND RUDY LARIS, THREE GREAT GRANDCHILDREN: LUKE ARMSTRONG, KHLOE VOISON, RUBY VOISON, ONE BROTHER: SYLVEST (BUDDY) CALLAHAN, ALSO MANY NIECES, NEPHEWS AND COUSINS.
HE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS WIFE: ELAINE DUPONT CALLAHAN, HIS PARENTS : ORVILLE ADAM CALLAHAN AND ELEANOR BRUNET CALLAHAN, TWO SISTERS: MARGARET CALLAHAN AND ELLA MARIE CALLAHAN, AND THREE BROTHERS: ALBERT CALLAHAN, HARRIS JOSEPH CALLAHAN, AND EUGENE ANTHONY CALLAHAN,AND ONE GRANDDAUGHTER: ERIN A. CALLAHAN.HE WAS A RETIRED CAPTAIN WITH THE HOUMA FIRE DEPT. AND A WWII VERTERAN SERVING WITH THE EUROPEAN OCCUPATION FORCES AT WAR’S END. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE VFW AND LONGTIME MEMBER OF THE LOUISIANA CATTLEMAN'S ASSOCIATION. HE GREW UP IN A TIME OF ECONOMIC DEPRESSION AND LOOMING WORLD WAR WHERE LUXURIES SUCH AS TV, ELECTRICITY AND INDOOR PLUMBING WERE NOT AN OPTION FOR STRUGGLING POOR FAMILIES AS HUNTING, FISHING, TRAPPING AND VEGETABLE GARDENS WERE A NECESSITY, NOT A HOBBIE. HIS BOYHOOD DAYS DEFINED HIS CHARACTER IN HIS COMMITMENT TO FEED, CLOTH AND PROVIDE FOR HIS WIFE AND THEIR SONS AND MAINTAIN STRONG TIES WITH HIS BROTHERS SISTERS AND COUSINS FOR HIS ENTIRE LIFE.
