Homer Allison Bland, Sr., 91, died Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 2:38 PM. He was a native of Damon, TX and resident of Houma, LA.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Chauvin Funeral Home and from 8 a.m. until 10:30a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Annunziata Catholic Church, with burial in Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cemetery.
He is survived by his sons, Homer A. "Butch" Bland, Jr. and wife Janis Bland, Thibodaux, LA, Larry J. Bland and wife JoAnn Bland, Gramercy, LA,
daughter, Pam Bland, Houston, TX, 9 Grandchildren, Duane, Craig, Todd, Robbie and Jason Bland; Brad Molaison, Kim Chiasson, Christina Delaneuville, and Nicole Ware, and 23 Great grandchildren, brother, Eugene Bland, sisters, Pauline B. Dillie, Louella Bland. He was preceded in death by his wife of seventy one years, Gladys LeBoeuf Bland, parents, Wallace Bland and Georgia Wooley Bland, brothers, Rogers, James, and Wallace Bland, Jr., sisters, Josephine Bland and Dorothy B. Skeins. He was a parishioner of Annunziata Catholic Church. Homer served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was stationed in Casablanca, Africa serving on the fire lines with the damaged planes as they came in.He was always interested in fire fighting. He began his career after serving his country in World War II. During his seven years as fire chief in the Houma Fire Department he recieved many honors. He was given an outstanding award from the State of Louisiana House of Representatives. They recognized him for his dedicated service as a member of the Houma Fire Department for his continuing commitment and service to the Houma Fire Department. He received an outstanding award by the Independent Insurance Agents of Terrebonne, Inc. He also recieved a Fire Fighter of the Year award in 1995 from the Terrebonne Rotary Club, Firefighter of the Year in 1985 by the State of Louisiana Veteran of Foreign Wars, an American Legion commendation award for outstanding service to his country, Emergency State Service award in 1999 from the Department of Foreign Wars and a service award for 40 years from the Bayou Blue Fire Department. He was still active in the Chiefs Association. He was Judge Advocate and Past Commander for American Legion Post 3100. He was also the President of North Houma fire company, member of ten local Fire Companies, member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1317 for over 50 years. He attended Texas A&M Fire Fighting School for several years, receiveing certified certificates. He also attended LSU Fire Training school and schooling in Maryrette, Wisconsin. At age 80 he was honored for being the oldest Volunteer Fire Fighter in the state. He was a beloved husband, loving father, grandfather and great grandfather.
