Dr. Harold Frank "Doc" "Honey" Demmer Sr., 81, a native of Cincinnati and resident of Houma, died at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Chauvin Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife, Alicelee Knoff Demmer of Houma; one son, Harold Demmer Jr. and wife, Loretta, of Baton Rouge; two daughters, Linda Sheridan and husband, Dennis, of Estero, Fla., and Lisa O’Dell and husband, Jerry, of Lubbock, Texas; one brother, Frank Xavier Demmer Jr. and wife, Sara, of Riverview, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jay Dupont, David Dupont, Lindsey O’Dell and Kelli O’Dell Mayes; six great-grandchildren, Evan Dupont, Mena Dupont, Landon Dupont, Amy Dupont, Trey Dupont and Baby Dupont; and one niece, Kristie Humphrey and husband, Greg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Xavier Demmer Sr. and Elsie Rossig Demmer.
He was a retired doctor of optometry for 48 years.
He was president of the American Optometric Association, president of the Gulf Zone Optometric Society, president of Louisiana State of Optometrists, vice president of American Optometric Association, president of Houma Lions Club and PTA at Houma Elementary, a member of Chamber of Commerce, Southern Eye Bank, Terrebonne Parish and Bayou River Area Health Planning Commission, Boy and Girl Scouts, American Legion and the VFW, instrumental in initiating and securing an eye/vision care program in the Louisiana State Penitentiary system, awarded Bourg Lions Community Service Award, Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation Service Award and named Louisiana Doctor of Optometry.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in Okinawa during World War II. In optometry school he was a member of Omega Epsilon Phi Fraternity and the Illuminating Engineering Society. He devoted much time to community, civic and church work. He loved trains, football, golf, baseball, reading, drawing/designing and public speaking.
