Dr. Jimmie R. Nelson, 72, a native of Helena, Mont., a former resident of Lewistown, Mont., and a resident of Houma, died after a short battle with cancer, at 6:30 a.m. Friday, July 13, 2007. A remembrance service will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Chauvin Funeral Home Chapel. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Darsey Nelson; four sons, Miles Nelson and wife, Tammy, of Cleveland, Texas, Scott and Ronald Nelson of Lafayette and Dr. Paul Nelson of Springfield, Mo.; one stepson, Nicholas Joel Boudreaux and wife, Ashley, of Houma; one half-brother, John Legowik of Orlando, Fla.; one half-sister, Pam Johnson and husband, Dale, of Choteau, Mont.; and four grandchildren, Jay Michael Nelson, Katie Ruth Nelson, Alyssa Diane Nelson and Brandi Marie Nelson. He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, Ernest H. Nelson and Fauntie Louise Kidder Nelson; his biological parents, Jean Lassalle and Thaddeus Legowik; and one half-brother, Ron Legowik. He was a 3rd class petty officer in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1952-55, stationed in Key West, Fla., with an honorable discharge. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Miami in 1959 and became a medical doctor after graduating from Tulane Medical School in 1963. He did his internship in Wichita, Kan., from 1963-64 and did general practice in Hubbard, Texas, and Luling from 1964-67. He did his radiology residency at Ochsner Clinic in 1967-70, and his radiology practice with Houma Radiology from 1970 until retiring in 1999. He was on staff at Terrebonne General Medical Center for 30 years. He loved fishing, hunting and especially tearing down and fixing diesel engines. He was a very loving and generous person and will be sadly missed by all. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Terrebonne Parish Animal Shelter, 131 Plant Road, Houma, LA 70363.
